Mises and Madison

"With respect to the two words 'general welfare,' I have always regarded them as qualified by the DETAIL of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a METAMORPHOSIS of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators." -April 20, 1831 Letter from James Madison (dubbed Father of the U.S. Constitution for his role in drafting of the text; see also The Federalist Papers, published on behalf of the American system as one of limited government of by and for the people of A Free Republic)~

"MODERN CRYPTODESPOTISM, which arrogates to itself the name of liberalism, finds fault with the negativity of the concept of freedom. The censure is spurious as it refers merely to the grammatical form of the idea and does not comprehend that all civil rights can be as well defined in affirmative as in negative terms. THEY ARE NEGATIVE AS THEY ARE DESIGNED TO OBVIATE AN EVIL, NAMELY THE OMNIPOTENCE OF THE POLICE POWER [OF GOVERNMENT], AND TO PREVENT THE STATE FROM BECOMING TOTALITARIAN." -Ludwig von Mises in chapter 21, The Theory of Money and Credit~

Agenda For Freedom 2012

(...A list of demands)

{I - Restoration of the U.S. Constitution}

At every level, government has exceeded its bounds. It has taxed, spent and regulated the American people without restraint or limitation. It verges on tyranny as it confiscates our wealth, repudiates the free market and intrudes into every aspect of our lives. It violates our American principles of freedom, personal responsibility and limited government.

We therefore reaffirm the First Principles of the American Revolution and demand the immediate restoration of limited, Constitutional government.

{II - The Government Class}

The last century witnessed the rise of a new and privileged class in America: The Government Class. It is an insidious alliance of elected officials, bureaucrats and special interests who receive the largess of government and profit from its decrees. This parasitical class has risen not on its merits but on its influence. It rules by decree instead of the consent of the governed. It arrogantly claims the right to seize and redistribute the wealth of private, productive American citizens. They grant themselves extravagant salaries, benefits, pensions and privileges of which others can only dream. Unlike the average American whose future depends upon a healthy market economy, the Government Class invests only in itself and relies only upon its power to coerce. So privileges is this new aristocracy that its gold-plated pensions remain fully intact while private pensions have lost over $2 trillion in value. The rise of this rapacious new class corresponds directly to the decline of our economic power and the erosion of constitutionally guaranteed liberties. As such it is completely counter to the First Principles and ideals of the American Revolution.

We therefore demand that our representatives serve without pay or emolument; that collective bargaining be abolished for government employees; that the civil service system be reformed; and, excepting the armed forces, that no government entity shall provide or guarantee a pension benefit for any person or institution.

{III - LIMITED TAXATION / FLAT TAX}

Treating our property as its own, the Government Class has paved The Road to Serfdom with our money.

It acknowledges no moral or constitutional limit on its power to tax the wealth of Americans and use it as it pleases. It taxes so that it may spend. It spends so that it may control. It purchases the vote of one American by promising him the property of another.

IT sustains its power and prerogatives by an oppressive and Byzantine system of taxation that is in itself the chief obstacle to economic growth and recovery. Such a system is utterly incompatible with our right to be secure in our property and thereby violates the First Principles of the American Revolution.

We therefore demand the adoption of a simplified State and Federal flat tax system that substantially reduces taxation and ensures that the burden is shared BY ALL AMERICANS.

{IV - EDUCATIONAL REFORM / SCHOOL CHOICE}

The Government Class uses the school system to usurp the natural and inalienable right of parents to educate their children.

Under the guise of multiculturalism and a false tolerance, it relentlessly and insidiously undermines American traditions and Judeo-Christian values.

The government seeks not to educate a free citizenry but to control it. It cynically calculates that a child who lives in government housing, who rides to school on a government bus, who eats in a government cafeteria, who is taught by a government approved teacher using only government approved boosk containing government approved ideas, will not question that government as an adult.

Free from competition and corrupted by unionism, the public school system is the most expensive and least efficient institution in our society.

There is little doubt that if our inner city schools were a publicly funded private enterprise, it would long ago have been shut down and its operators put in jail. This system is utterly incompatible with our rights of Free Speech, Free Association and Freedom of Religion and is by reason thereof, the chief impediment ot the restoration of the Republic.

We therefore demand that the government monopoly in education be abolished and replaced by system of tax credits and vouchers so that parents may send their children to a private or public school of their choice.

{V - ENVIRONMENTAL REFORM / ENERGY}

The Government Class has employed a false environmentalism in a naked assault on private property, on the free enterprise system and on any notion of Constitutional, limited government.

Advancing speculative, pseudo-scientific theories of climate change and global warming, they seek control over every aspect of the American economy. They refuse to develop our ample energy resources.

Already straining under the crushing weight of debt, spending, taxation and regulation, they now seek to heap upon us an even heavier burden of "Cap and Trade."

Even more destructive than the current system, these new proposals will devastate the American economy, weaken our defenses, strengthen our enemies and spread economic and political chaos throughout the world.

As with the Great Depression, war may well come in its wake.

We therefore demand that our government abandon its destructive environmental policies, curb the EPA and forthwith fully develop our energy resources. They must immediately lift all bans on oil drilling and fast track the construction of nuclear power plants, issue permits for clean coal facilities, build new refineries and, most importantly, radically limit the jurisdiction and power of the courts to make environmental policy.

{VI - HEALTHCARE / PRESERVE PRIVATE HEALTHCARE}

Not content with destroying our industries, a voracious Government Class has moved with frightening speed to nationalize the American healthcare system.

Now seeking control over our very lives, it presents itself as the solution to crisis of its own making.

The same people who reject the death penalty will now decide who receives treatment and, therefore, who lives and who dies. The same government that has bankrupted Social Security and presided over the collapse of the financial system now insists it can provide healthcare to more people, more efficiently than the free market.

This is a monstrous lie. Like Socialism itself, socialized medicine has failed everywhere it has been tried. More importantly, socialized medicine grossly violates the letter and spirit of the Constitution and must be rejected entirely.

We therefore demand that the government withdraw from this dangerous course. Instead we urge legal, tax and regulatory reforms that will enable doctors, patients, employers and insurers to work within the free market to develop healthcare solutions without the intrusion of government.

{VII - SPENDING / DISMANTLE THE MODERN WELFARE STATE}

The modern welfare state has spent itself into oblivion and is now collapsing of its own weight.

The Government Class has eagerly embraced every failed socialist fantasy in the dustbin of history. In its lust for power, it has promised everything to everyone.

It has shredded the constitution, made a mockery of federalism, savaged the economy and poised this country on the brink of bankruptcy.

It treats our property and income as its own. What it cannot tax, it takes. When it can no longer spend, it borrows. When it can do neither, it mandates. It sweeps away everything in its path and with our inalienable rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

We therefore demand that the government cease the redistribution of property, that the modern welfare state be dismantled and that the government spending be confined to the narrow, limited purposes sanctioned by the Constitution.

{VIII - DEBT, DEFICITS & INFLATION / INTERGENERATIONAL THEFT}

In the last 70 years an unrestrained Government Class has incurred a national debt that now exceeds $10 TRILLION dollars.

The unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare alone will exceed $50 TRILLION. To fund this debt they have chosen to inflate our money supply which will debase our currency, steal from our creditors and drive up interest rates for public and private borrowers alike. Worse yet, this debt will not be repaid by this generation or even the next.

Instead, millions of unborn Americans will have to shoulder a debt they neither created nor approved. This unconscionable intergenerational theft violates the First Principles of the American Revolution: No taxation without representation.

We therefore demand that Government radically reduce its size and scope; cease deficit spending except in time of war; end inflation; and aggressively reduce our national debt!
